The Best Survival Knife - Reviews

Fixed Blade

The best survival knife option is a fixed blade survival knife, it is hands down the best type of knife for outdoor survival. These knives are designed to take abuse and punishment. The are often used for shelter building, chopping, fixed as a spear tip, fire building, prying, hammering and dozens of other tasks.

There are some specs that you need to look for when finding the best survival knife for you such as making sure that it is a full tang blade. Full tang is a term that describes a single piece of metal that starts as a blade and continues through the entire handle. The handle can be fixed to the tang by rivets, can be injection-molded rubber (Kraton), braided para cord or another type of handle that is affixed to the tang.

Lanyard Holes

Lanyard holes are holes found on a knife where cord or rope can be fastened to. You want to make sure that your knife has at least one of these at the base below the handle. Some Survival knives will have additional lanyard holes below the blade so that the knife can be easily fastened to a pole as a spear. You can do this with one lanyard hole as well but 3 make it easier.

Other Things To Consider

Some other things to consider are: a sharpener that comes attached to the sheath, the sheath itself, whether the knife sits is it quietly for stalking game, the options for attaching the sheath to your belt/ body. Also price. you dont have to spend 200 bucks to get the best survival knife but should be willing to shell out around a hundred bucks. With this type of knife the price is directly related to the quality.

Big Knives and Choppers for Wilderness Survival and Camping

!±8± Big Knives and Choppers for Wilderness Survival and Camping

Big knives have always fascinated me and I know they have the same effect on a lot of other people as well. They bring up images of Jim Bowie, Davy Crockett, mountain men, and the Long Knives. Small knives are useful, practical, and handy, but they just don't fire the imagination like large knives do. Both are necessary for the wilderness, especially if you don't carry an axe or tomahawk. The definition of a large knife varies, but most people have it in the 7-9" and up range.

Big knives can be used for the big jobs that a Fallkniven F1 or similar size knife just can't do with any facility, but can still handle most of the smaller, finer jobs that the small knives do. They can be used for any kind of heavy work, such as chopping, batonning, clearing branches, and such. Batonning (splitting small to medium chunks of wood by driving the knife through the wood with a wooden baton) is made easy by a longer blade, especially if the grind is suitable. A longer, heavier knife makes chopping a breeze. Sure, it may not be as easy as chopping with an axe, but a knife is a lot easier to carry! An accomplished worker can do most all of the small jobs as well. A Busse may not clean a fish as well as a Buck Vanguard, but it will still do the job and works immensely better for shelter building and procuring firewood. The best option is to just carry a folder or a small fixed blade along with a chopper.

Big knives can be found in any configuration desired. There are the more traditionally shaped bowies like the Cold Steel Trailmaster and Recon Scout. Ka-bar's Becker line is excellent quality for for a low price. The Becker BK-9 and BK-7 are great choices and the favorites of many outdoorsmen. The Ka-bar USMC and related knives aren't quite the large chopper-type of knife, but they are still large enough to do some chopping and splitting and have a great history. The Ka-bar Large Heavy Bowie in both its sizes has a good reputation for an inexpensive large knife. Busse knives, Ferhrman, and such companies are very good quality, but you definitely pay for what you get. If you can afford them, though, there aren't many knives better. Another option for the large knife category is a short machete. A 10-12", maybe even 14" machete from a good company like Condor, Tramontina, or Ontario will do the job well and for very little money, especially the Tramontina.

!±8± The Bowie Knife

The Bowie knife. Made popular by Jim Bowie. It is one of the most famous knives in America. It was first made by a mane named James Black. All though the bowie knife was not just one design but many designs that evolved over the years. The store of how Jim Bowie and his knife first started when he was involved in the sandbar duel in 1827. I fight started and Bowie and his knife killed a man named Norris Wright. Even thought he was wounded with a rifle shot he drove back Wrights party and he and his knife became instantly famous. After this event every one wanted a bowie knife.

The first Bowie knives where at least 6 inches long and normally about two and a half inches in width. There is really know set size that these knives have to be but that is what they are all about. There are some that are bigger and smaller. Now the actual design of the bowie knife is very sound design the curved top part of the edge is for skinning a carcass. While the strait part of the edge is for straight cutting. It is said that the bowie knife is long enough to use as a sword, sharp enough to use as a razor, and heavy enough to use as a hatchet. Later the United States Air Force put saw teeth on the back side of the knife. The reason for this is to saw thought acrylic glass canopy of a crashed aircraft. The United States Army also gave this variation of the bowie knife to its helicopter crews for the same reason.

There are many variations of the bowie knife. Some use this name to describe any large sheath knife. In the Civil War Confederate soldiers made huge knives called D-Guard Bowie knives. Even thought they where more like short swords. Bowie knives are still very popular with collectors and there are many spin off like the Ka-Bar. It is a knife that is based off the Bowie design. Ernest Emerson used the Bowie as a logo on his folding Bowie knives.

Jim Bowie was inducted into the Blade Magazine in the 1988 Blade show in Atlanta Georgia for his huge impact on the knife making industry. Now the Bowie knife is illegal in many states. Even in the state where Jim Bowie died (Texas) Where Jim Bowie and his knife fought and died in the Alamo to help make Texas apart of the United States. It is also illegal in many other states.
